The painting ‘The Couturier’ is a painting of a Edinburgh based fashion designer Judy R Clark. We have collaborated together in the past, I have dressed my models in her beautiful outfits for paintings such as ‘Eventide’, ‘Midnight Blue’ ‘Tailfeathers’ and ‘The Looking Glass’. I went to her studio for a chat and to look at new some new creations and I was struck by how beautiful the light was in her studio. It was an early November morning and the double height ceilings and large windows at Abbeymount, Edinburgh originally a Victorian Primary School, cast wonderful shadows around her mannequins. I decided to paint the full interior with Judy present. I felt it important to show the relationship that she has with her work. There seems to be silent conversation happening between the dressed mannequin and the maker herself. While creating this work, I had two of my favourite paintings in my mind. One was ‘The Floors Scrapers‘ by Gustave Caillebotte and ‘The Orange Blind’ By Francis Cadell. I added both into the composition at the last minute on the far left under the window.
