The Empty Lands

My wife was the model for this painting, so it's very special to me. She is from Namibia, and has a special love for Swakopmund, so I painted where the desert meets the ocean in this scene. It is part of my Siren Series where I painted women exposed to the wild elements at the edge of the sea. The Siren paintings are my most powerful and emotional paintings. They remind us of our vulnerability, our wildness, and our connection to untameable natural and psychological forces. Her face is hidden from us, but we feel as though we are looking through her eyes; as though we are one with the experience of bravely facing these forces.
