The Medium

For those unfamiliar with the term, metalpoint is simply the art of drawing with a metal wire directly on to a sheet of paper prepared with a special abrasive undercoat.

Many metals can be used to create metalpoint drawings: copper, lead, nickel, brass, even gold and platinum, but the most familiar and historically significant drawings were done using a fine silver wire, termed “silverpoints”. My particular approach utilises 24ct. gold as well as the more usual silver.

My images are uncomplicated, relying on realism, compositional strength and straight-forward lighting to express the artistic vision I am trying to create. Since I work predominantly in a monochromatic medium, considerations of colour and hue are irrelevant, but I consider that an image becomes more powerful when these elements are stripped away. The end result is all that matters.
